GUIDELINES FOR FIRES IN OPEN AIR
In order to protect the citizens of Parry Sound and their
property from potential fire hazards, a Burning Control By-Law exists
within the Town of Parry Sound. This guideline is strictly designed
for education purposes. For accurate inquiries, the by-law itself should
be referred to.
A Ministry of Natural Resources declared restricted fire
zone has ultimate jurisdiction and must be adhered to at all times.
Open air fire including those set for warmth or cooking are not permitted
during a restricted fire zone.
The Ministry of Natural Resources no longer issues fire
permits for small scale residential burning.
OPEN AIR BURNING
Burning of wood, brush, or discarded wood products will
be permitted under a permit, except in the Absolute Prohibition Area.
(Downtown - Central Business District).
Incinerators will be allowed except in the Absolute Prohibition Area.
A fee of $25.00 will be charged for on incinerator permit.
Camp/Recreational Fires will be permitted except on the Absolute Prohibition
Area. (No permit required)
Portable stoves or charcoal installation for the purpose of cooking
of obtaining warmth is allowed in all areas.
Burning of Grass and Leaves is NOT allowed.
ABSOLUTE PROHIBITION
A fire in open air is not permitted in areas of the Town
of Parry Sound identified in the absolute prohibition area described
below. Barbeques and fires for cooking and obtaining warmth are exempt.
Fires for cooking and obtaining warmth must be in a portable stove or
charcoal installation and in the cases of a stove, must be at least
one meter from naturally occurring flammable material. Camp/Recreational
fires are NOT allowed.
Absolute prohibition area (DOWNTOWN AREA)
No person shall start a fire in open air nor in a yard incinerator in
the Central Business District of the Town of Parry Sound as defined
by the Town of Parry Sound Official Plan.

FIRES IN OTHER AREAS
Are permitted in all other areas of the Town provided
that the following burn regulations are adhered to.
No person shall set a fire in open air or permit a fire
to burn:
1. Using materials other than Class A combustibles (wood, brush or discarded
wood by-products). Burning of materials such as rubber tires, paint,
asphalt shingles, chemical wastes, synthetic or man-made materials is
NOT permitted.
2. On any traveled portion of any common or public highway
3. On any asphalt surface
4. In any park owned or operated by the Municipality without written
permission of the municipality
5. Within 15 meters (50') of any building, structure, hedge, fence,
vehicular roadway of any kind or nature, or overhead wires.
6. Within 8 meters (26') of any property line.
7. Unless constantly attended by a responsible person until the fire
is out.
8. Without having apparatus, equipment and responsible personnel (18years
of age) and a supply of water ready, sufficient to control the fire.
9. Under conditions whereby the wind may carry or expand the fire to
another part of the lot on which the fire is located, or to another
lot.
10. In such a manner and condition that the smoke there from impairs
the vision on highways or roadways
11. Under conditions whereby any odour or smoke may cause inconvenience,
irritation or discomfort to others.
12. Which includes a fire in a yard incinerator after 8:00 pm in the
evening, or before 7:00 am in the morning.
13. Unless placed in a single pile less than 2 meters in diameter and
less than 2 meters high. Notwithstanding the generality of this clause,
the Chief Fire Official or his designate may upon application extend
the size of the pile to be burned.
14. Within 2 meters of flammable materials.
15. Within 5 meters of a forest or woodland
INCINERATORS
No person shall set a fire in an incinerator
1. Within 5 meters of any building, structure, forest or woodland
2. Within two meters of any flammable materials.
3. In a yard incinerator unless enclosed and covered by a heavy steel
screen mesh with openings less than 5 millimeters.
GRASS FIRES
No person shall set a fire outdoors for the purpose of
burning grass.
LEAF FIRES
No persons shall set a fire for the purpose of burning
leaves
CAMP/RECREATIONAL FIRES
Camp Fires are permitted in all areas EXCEPT in the Absolute
Prohibition Area
No person shall a fire outdoors for the purpose of a Camp/Recreational
Fire unless:
1. The fire is not greater than 75cm (30 inches) in diameter
by 90cm (36 inches in height.
2. The fire is at least 1 meter from any flammable material.
3. The fire is at least 3 meters from overhanging vegetation, forest
or woodland
4. The fire is at least 15 meters from any building or structure
Upon the fire department being dispatched to extinguish an illegal fire
a service fee will be levied.
The by-law does not exempt any person from their responsibility involving
the impact of smoke on the surrounding air quality. Check with the Ministry
of Environment and Energy for more details.
